About Santos
A São Paulo investigative journalist who reads true crime for its ethics as much as its thrills. Gabriel asks who a story serves.
Reviewing voice
Taut, probing, ethically serious. Weighs sourcing, fairness to victims, and narrative restraint; gripping but never lurid.

We Keep the Dead Close
Becky Cooper
A searching, ambitious true-crime investigation that is often most compelling when it doubts itself. Yet its sprawl, self-consciousness, and occasional overreach prevent it from becoming the morally exacting book it wants to be.

Hidden Valley Road
Robert Kolker
A lucid, humane account of a family turned inside out by schizophrenia, though it is stronger as social investigation than as a fully satisfying book of characters. Kolker’s restraint is admirable, but at times the structural neatness slightly tames the mess of the real case.
