Ed Conway has a genuine gift for making the hidden industrial skeleton of civilisation visible. In Material World he follows the substances that make contemporary life possible — sand, salt, iron, copper, lithium and the rest — and shows, with admirable clarity, that every digital fantasy still rests on grubby, heavy, energy-hungry material realities. I found his central argument persuasive and salutary: the supposedly immaterial world is in fact an elaborate choreography of extraction, logistics, chemistry and compromise.
What I admired most was the book’s practical intelligence. Conway does not merely list commodities; he traces supply chains, mines, factories, geopolitical chokepoints and environmental costs. He is at his best when he patiently explains why the transition to low-carbon technologies does not abolish material dependency but reconfigures it, often in awkward ways. This is a useful corrective to the kind of breezy techno-optimism that treats material constraints as an inconvenience rather than the basic condition of engineering. He writes accessibly without condescension, which is rarer than it ought to be.
Yet the book’s very expansiveness is also its weakness. Conway has a journalist’s instinct for scene-setting and a magpie’s appetite for examples, but the result can feel more panoramic than analytical. Some chapters move briskly where they should slow down, especially when the argument begins to brush against questions of scale, substitution and industrial policy. I wanted more hard-edged comparison: how much of a bottleneck is genuinely binding, what can be substituted, at what cost, over what timescale? The book is alert to constraint, but not always ruthless enough about quantifying it.
There is also a tendency to smooth the rough edges of systems that are, in practice, deeply political. Mining, refining and manufacturing are not merely technical processes with unfortunate side effects; they are sites of labour conflict, ecological damage and distributional struggle. Conway knows this, but sometimes the prose turns explanatory where it should become more accusatory. Still, these are limitations of emphasis rather than of intelligence. Material World is a serious and useful book, and one that leaves the reader better informed about the stubborn physical basis of modernity.
Who should read this
Read this if you want a lucid, wide-ranging account of the materials that make modern life possible, especially if you are interested in energy transition, industrial policy, or supply-chain fragility. If you need a tightly argued technical monograph, this is not that book; if you want a smart primer with real worldly intelligence, it is well worth your time.
