Daniel E. Lieberman

An ambitious evolutionary argument that explains obesity and chronic disease through the mismatch between ancient physiology and modern food environments, but it is sometimes too eager to turn a useful lens into a master key.

Daniel E. Lieberman writes with a clear gift for making evolutionary biology feel urgent rather than decorative. His central claim — that many of our metabolic troubles arise because Palaeolithic bodies are being asked to live in a calorie-dense, low-exertion, ultra-processed world — is broadly persuasive, and he supports it with a respectable command of anatomy, energetics, and human evolutionary history. I was especially pleased when he distinguished between proximate and ultimate explanations, a distinction too many popular science books wave at and then ignore.

That said, the book is strongest when it is explanatory rather than prosecutorial. Lieberman is at his best tracing how appetite, adiposity, and energy regulation evolved under intermittent scarcity and high physical activity. But once he moves from evolutionary framing to contemporary dietary advice, the argument becomes flatter than the biology warrants. Human metabolism is not a simple “stone-age body, modern diet” morality tale. Endocrine regulation, genetic variation, socioeconomic constraints, sleep, stress, medication, microbiome effects, and developmental programming all complicate the neatness of his thesis. He acknowledges some of this, but not with the rigour the subject demands.

The book also slips, at times, into the familiar vice of popular biology: the seduction of a single elegant story. Evolutionary mismatch is real, yet it is not sufficient to explain the obesity epidemic on its own, nor does it neatly account for the diversity of phenotypes we see across populations and individuals. I wanted more caution around causal claims and a sharper distinction between evidence, inference, and metaphor. Lieberman is not careless, but he does occasionally overstate what an evolutionary narrative can prove.

Even so, the book earns its keep. It is well organised, readable, and often genuinely illuminating on how natural selection shapes bodies that are exquisitely adapted to environments that no longer exist. I finished it more convinced by the value of evolutionary medicine, but also more aware of its limits. That is a respectable achievement, though not a transformative one.

Who should read this

Read this if you want a clear, intellectually serious introduction to evolutionary explanations for obesity and metabolic disease. I would not hand it to someone looking for a definitive clinical guide, or to anyone expecting a nuanced account of the social and biochemical complexity of weight regulation.

I admired the book most when it made me slow down and check my own assumptions about “normal” human physiology. I was least impressed when its elegant evolutionary frame threatened to become an all-purpose explanation, because biology is rarely that obedient.
